Pentagon: Libya is 'multi-phase operation'

The Pentagon has given details of US involvement in the first day of a UN-led military campaign in Libya.

More than 110 missiles have been fired by the UK and US, in what Vice Admiral William E Gortney described as "the first phase in a multi-phase operation."

Speaking from the Pentagon, Vice Admiral Gortney said the mission aimed to "prevent further attacks on citizens and opposition groups" and to "degrade the regime's capability to resist the no-fly zone".
