UN to airlift supplies to drought hit areas in Africa

The World Food Programme is to begin airlifting supplies to parts of the Horn of Africa affected by a devastating drought, which the UN has described as the worst there for 60 years.

This will be the first airlift of food aid since the UN declared a famine in two areas of Somalia last week.

The Disasters Emergency Committee has said the British public has contributed £30m in the past three weeks to its appeal for parts of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

There is a long running conflict in Somalia between pro-government forces and the Islamist rebels, al-Shabab.
