Nato 'saved countless lives' in Libya

Nato's secretary general has told Libyans that their country is finally free and that Nato operations in the country will end at midnight local time.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he was proud of the part his organisation had played in protecting them, that it had worked to protect civilians and "saved countless lives".

Nato forces played a key role in ousting Libya's former leader, Col Muammar Gaddafi, in a seven-month campaign which ended with Gaddafi's death.
