French-led forces in Mali closing in on Timbuktu

French-led forces in the West African state of Mali are closing in on Timbuktu in their offensive against al-Qaeda linked Islamists.

The rebels are withdrawing north in the face of French air strikes which have destroyed many of their vehicles, weapons and bases.
