Lagos demolitions: Protesters demand new homes after fire

A protest has been held in the Nigerian city of Lagos after up to 30,000 people were left homeless when their buildings were destroyed by fire last week.

The human rights group Amnesty International says it is not clear how the blaze started but accused the police of stopping residents from putting it out – an allegation the police deny.

Last month however, the state governor ordered the demolition of slums close to Lagos lagoon, citing health and safety concerns.

BBC Nigeria correspondent Martin Patience reports.
