Armistice 'withdrawal' raises tension at Korea border

The BBC has become the first foreign broadcaster to visit the joint security area between North and South Korea following the North's announcement that it would no longer recognise the countries' armistice agreement, which ended hostilities on the Korean Peninsula 60 years ago.

The withdrawal came amid growing tensions in the region and at a time of large-scale US-South Korea military exercises.

However, South Korea maintains that a unilateral move to end the pact is not legally possible.
