Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra announces election

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has announced she will dissolve parliament and call an election following a renewed surge of anti-government protests in the capital, Bangkok.

The move followed the resignation of all opposition MPs from parliament on Sunday, who claim she is being controlled by her brother Thaksin, the ousted former prime minister.

She said: "After listening to opinions from all sides, I have decided to request a royal decree to dissolve parliament this year, 2013."
