China elephant calf rescued from water storage pit

Rescuers came to the aid of an elephant calf which fell into an empty water storage pit in a nature reserve in Yunnan Province, south west China.

The mammal was found by local villagers in the 2m deep hole on Tuesday. It is believed the animal had been stuck overnight.

They alerted the authorities because rain had made the walls of the pit slippery and the calf could not climb out.

Police officers lowered one side of the pit which meant the elephant was able to escape unharmed.
