Surfer killed by shark south of Perth, Australia

A man has died from his injuries after he was attacked by a shark in waters off West Australia.

The 31-year-old man was surfing alone early when he was attacked near Gracetown, about 270km (167 miles) south of Perth.

Witness Rob Alder described how he tried to help the injured surfer.

"I would imagine that it was a shark that mistook him for a seal," he said.

Craig Anderson, from Western Australia State Police, said a couple walking along the coast had spotted the surfer in trouble and had raised the alarm.
