Japan quake: Tokyo streets crowded after earthquake

The most powerful earthquake to hit Japan since records began has hit the country's north-east and triggered a devastating tsunami.

Tokyo was 400km (250 miles) from the epicentre but the city still felt the effect.

Public transport has been suspended, elevators switched off in many buildings and thousands of people have gathered in squares and around train stations.

The BBC's Roland Buerk said the ground shook underfoot despite being a distance from the centre of the quake.
