Gorbachev: Putin has 'castrated' Russian politics

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev has said Vladimir Putin has "castrated" the political system in Russia, and should not stand in next year's presidential elections.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Gorbachev said Mr Putin and his team were killing development in the country, which needs to start pushing towards democracy again.

His comments come on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the Moscow coup which led to his resignation and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
