Silvio Berlusconi resigns as Italian PM

Silvio Berlusconi has resigned as Italian prime minister, after MPs approved an austerity deal to help curb the debt crisis threatening the eurozone.

Mr Berlusconi's career has been marred by scandals in recent years, and this evening there were cheers from some of those who had gathered outside the presidential palace in Rome to witness his resignation.
