'Work together to strengthen checks' says Romanian PM

Foods sold in Europe and the UK labelled as beef has been found to contain horsemeat.

The supply chain reportedly led back to traders in Cyprus and the Netherlands and then to abattoirs in Romania.

Romanian Prime Minister, Victor Ponta, has denied allegations that abattoirs in the country had breached rules and standards.

He told BBC Newsnight's Gavin Esler the horsemeat scandal was a "clear case of fraud", adding "we should work together on the European side to strengthen the checks and the rules."

Mr Ponta added his main responsibility was towards the consumer saying they have "the right to know the truth about food."
