Crimean parliament formally applies to join Russia

Crimea's parliament has formally declared independence from Ukraine and asked to join the Russian Federation.

The move follows Sunday's controversial referendum. Election officials said the vote was nearly 97% in favour of joining the Russian Federation, with a turnout of 83%.

The government in Kiev has said it will not recognise the result and the US and EU have condemned the vote as illegal.
