Spain's King Felipe VI is proclaimed head of state

King Felipe VI has been sworn in as the new king of Spain. He received the royal sash from his father, Juan Carlos, at the Zarzuela Palace near Madrid.

The swearing-in ceremony was held in the form of a proclamation rather than a coronation.

It is the first royal transition in Spain since democracy was restored in the 1970s.

Celebrations were kept low key, as many Spaniards are facing economic difficulties.
