Ukraine crisis: Europe leaders plot demilitarised zone

Crucial negotiations over the future of eastern Ukraine are due to resume with a telephone conference between the leaders of Germany and France - who have proposed a new ceasefire plan - and the Russian and Ukrainian presidents.

The plan is thought to include a broad buffer zone, requiring the retreat of Russian-backed forces to ceasefire lines agreed last September.

In return the separatists would be granted greater autonomy.
