Ukraine crisis: 'Intensity of fighting has decreased' - Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said fighting in eastern Ukraine has decreased considerably since the ceasefire came into force at the weekend.

Speaking at a joint news conference with the Hungarian Prime Minister, Mr Putin called for an orderly retreat of Ukrainian troops from the town of Debaltseve, where they are encircled by pro-Russian rebels.

Heavy fighting has been reported in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the key town of Debaltseve.

Both sides also failed to begin a withdrawal of heavy weapons, despite a Monday deadline agreed in the peace agreement.
