In their shoes: Honouring Guernsey's fallen

Military enthusiast Brett Leivars, 32, is part of the Guernsey Military History Company, a group which marks the contribution of the island's military.

A century on from their bloodiest battle, a memorial to the men of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry will be unveiled at Masnieres, near the town of Cambrai, in northern France, on Thursday.

Brett says walking over the battlefields in military equipment makes him think about the sacrifices made by the men, many of whom were conscripted.

More than 80 islanders died in a single day at Cambrai, heralded as the longed-for victory on the Western Front.
