Musical theatre returns to Cuba with Carmen

Cuba once had a strong tradition of musical theatre that all but disappeared after the 1959 revolution, when it was considered frivolous and ideologically inappropriate.

Now an award-winning international team has revived the genre, creating a Cuban version of the hit show Carmen Jones.

Producers from around the world, have travelled to Havana to watch the production with a view to taking the Cuban Carmen to the West End, Broadway and beyond.

Sarah Rainsford went to meet the people bringing the Cuban Carmen to life.
