Libya protests: Pressure mounts on isolated Gaddafi

Efforts to rescue hundreds of Britons who are trapped in Libya are being stepped up today amid criticism that the foreign office has been slow to help them.

A charter flight has left Gatwick to bring home some of the 500 British nationals thought to be stranded in Libya - including oil workers in remote desert camps.

In the capital, Tripoli, more gunfire has been heard today amid claims that up to a thousand people may have died since the unrest began.
