Sanction threat as Syria violence escalates

The Foreign Secretary, William Hague, has said plans have been drawn up to evacuate Britons from Syria after an escalation in the violence there.

Some 400 pro-democracy protesters are thought to have been killed by security forces in the past month.

Mr Hague warned the Syrian government that it was now at a "fork in the road", and hinted at sanctions if the violent crackdown continued.

Foreign journalists are not being allowed into Syria.
