Syrian ambassador Jaafari rejects push for UN action

A deeply divided UN Security Council has failed to agree on an EU-proposed statement condemning Syria's violent crackdown against protesters.

A draft proposed by France, Britain, Germany and Portugal was opposed by several within the 15-member council.

Syria's ambassador to the UN, Bashar Jaafari, criticised the push for action.

He said: "This security council, gentlemen, is very important for maintaining peace and security, not undermining peace and security.
