Syria unrest: Government troops move into Homs

Syrian government forces have launched a ground offensive on rebels in the Baba Amr quarter of the city of Homs, following weeks of heavy shelling.

Sources on both sides say government troops tried to advance on several fronts, but Syrian officials say their forces are "mopping up" while activists maintain the attack was repelled.

Meanwhile Kofi Annan has said he will visit the region in his role as UN-Arab League Joint Special Envoy for Syria, following the country's refusal to allow UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos entry.
