Syrian situation 'getting worse' says Valerie Amos

A bomb has gone off in the Syrian capital, Damascus, near a hotel used by United Nations observers.

Syrian officials said the bomb exploded in a fuel truck, and three people were injured but none was a member of UN staff.

The head of the UN's emergency relief programme, Valerie Amos, is in Syria to discuss aid for civilians affected by the fighting.

Speaking to the BBC before news of the blast, she said the government wanted to maintain responsibility for humanitarian assistance rather than allow the UN a role.
