Syria's main opposition party has new leader

Syria's main opposition group, meeting in Qatar, has chosen the Christian George Sabra as its leader.

Mr Sabra, a former Communist, takes up the job at the head of the Syrian National Council as it comes under pressure to be part of a new, more united opposition capable of ruling Syria if President Assad falls.

In the past 24 hours alone, thousands of refugees have left the country, with most fleeing to Turkey.
