Amr Moussa: 'We are hoping to save Egypt from collapse'

Former presidential candidate Amr Moussa has supported the Egyptian army's "positive" statement, after it gave the country's rival parties 48 hours to resolve a deadly political crisis.

Mr Moussa, from the main opposition party the National Salvation Front, told the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen that the "people are calling for early presidential elections".

Mr Moussa also said that his party is not "playing politics" but "hoping to save Egypt from collapse".

The army would offer a "road map" for peace if Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and his opponents failed to heed "the will of the people", it said.

It later issued a clarifying statement denying its warning amounted to a coup.
