'No tears will be shed for Ariel Sharon' in Lebanon

Ariel Sharon was seen as the main architect of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon.

With Mr Sharon as defence minister directing the campaign, Israeli forces for the first time ever besieged an Arab capital, Beirut.

It culminated a few months later in the massacre of hundreds of unarmed Palestinian civilians in the Beirut camps of Sabra and Shatila by Israel's Christian militia allies.

Ariel Sharon was widely blamed for the atrocity, and had to resign.
