Afghan election: Abdullah and Ghani set for second round

Both candidates in the Afghan presidential election are insisting that they are prepared to fight on rather than make a deal.

Preliminary results show that neither the former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah or former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani reached the 50% needed for an outright win.

Final official results are due to be announced on 14 May after a period for adjudication of complaints.

Mr Abdullah and Mr Ghani could form a power-sharing deal, or choose to go to a second round.
