Egypt upholds 183 Muslim Brotherhood death sentences

A court in Egypt has upheld the death sentences for 183 supporters of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

The defendants were among almost 683 people accused of attacking a police station in Minya last year.

The spiritual leader of the banned group, Mohammed Badie, is among those sentenced to death.

Five other defendants were given prison terms of between 15 and 55 years and the rest were acquitted.

The original mass trial in April, when the judge sentenced all defendants to death, drew widespread criticism from human rights groups.
