Egypt calls Suez extension 'a miracle and its gift to the world'

A ceremonial flotilla sailed down the Suez canal to mark the inauguration of a 35km (21m) extension to the waterway.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi travelled on board a historic yacht alongside foreign leaders.

It has been marked by a day of celebration across Egypt but there have been criticisms over the economic rationale behind the expansion.

The extension to the Suez canal has been proclaimed on billboards in Cairo as "Egypt's miracle and its gift to the world".
