Syria UN: Handshake but no smiles as US and Russia meet
The Russian and American presidents have met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Monday.
Russia's Vladimir Putin described his first meeting with Barack Obama in more than a year as "surprisingly frank".
American officials say the two presidents agreed to explore a political solution to the Syria crisis, but disagreed on the future of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.
Mr Putin did say Russia could take part in international airstrikes against Islamic State positions, but ruled out boots on the ground.
