1,500 flee as southern California wildfire spreads

1,500 people have been evacuated as a wildfire in southern California's San Jacinto Mountains quickly spreads.

Lucas Spelman, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said "wind was a definite factor".

A dozen structures had been damaged or destroyed but fire officials could not say how many were homes.

More than 500 firefighters, helped by five helicopters and five air tankers, were working to protect homes and get ahead of the flames.
