Student: US weather makes walking 'extremely painful'

The cold weather hitting the east coast of United States is 'extremely painful' to experience, a student has said.

With temperatures plummeting to -50 Celsius in some areas, millions of people have been warned to stay indoors.

Emma Rose Smith is a student at the University of Wisconsin, where temperatures have dropped below -30C.

She told BBC Radio 5 live's Breakfast: "It was extremely painful trying to walk outside to my car, which is only eight or ten feet from my front door."
