US 'wants to engage' with India's new prime minister

The US says it welcomes Narendra Modi's landslide victory in last week's Indian elections.

It is a significant shift in attitude for the US, which refused to give Mr Modi an entrance visa in 2005 following communal violence in 2002 in Gujarat when he was chief minister.

The state department's assistant secretary on south and central Asian affairs, Nisha Desai Biswal, told the BBC's Brajesh Upadhyay that although what happened in Gujarat was "deeply troubling", the US government now wants to engage positively with the new prime minister's government.
