Freed US Sgt Bergdahl 'deserted', former comrade claims

Freed US soldier, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, was a deserter who could be court marshalled, according to a member of his former battalion.

Sgt Bergdahl, who was held captive for nearly five years in Afghanistan, was released in exchange for five detainees from Guantanamo Bay on Saturday.

The 28-year-old vanished from his base near the Pakistan border in 2009, and fellow battalion member Nathan Bethea was part of the search team to find him.

Mr Bethea told BBC Radio 5 live's Drive that based on evidence he heard and saw, Sgt Bergdhal "must have deserted" and was captured by the Taliban whilst "wandering somewhere."
