Canada's election: What's at stake at the polls?

The federal election in Canada is set for 19 October.

The race is a tight three-way contest between incumbent Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party, Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and New Democratic Party leader Thomas Mulcair.

Mr Harper has been prime minister for almost 10 years and is hoping to become the first Canadian PM in more than 100 years to win a fourth term in office. The election has become a referendum on his legacy.
