Obama Supreme Court nominee: 'Greatest honour of my life'

US President Barack Obama has nominated federal appeals court Judge Merrick Garland to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court.

Mr Obama said Mr Garland was "uniquely prepared" for the position, while Mr Garland called the nomination "the greatest honour" of his life.

Republicans in the Senate have pledged to block Mr Merrick's confirmation, saying a justice should not be appointed during an election year.
