Political battle over Supreme Court pick

With the announcement of Merrick Garland as President Barack Obama's nominee to the US Supreme Court, Senate Republicans have repeated their opposition to holding hearings on confirming a replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia.

A recent Pew survey found that 56% of Americans want the Senate to act on Mr Obama's nominee, but that is divided largely along political lines and a similar number say it is "personally important" to them.
