A group of vandals "aggressively targeting" Derby's e-bikes has forced the scheme to stop.
"Unprecedented levels of vandalism" over the last two months coupled with a nationwide lack of parts available for repairs meant more than two-thirds of the bikes are out of action.
The owner of Hourbike, the company which operates it, said the vandals were "seemingly intent on destroying it".
The closure is described as temporary while those behind it consider their options.
The scheme, which allows users to rent bikes for a short period of time, was started with 200 electric bikes last year at a cost of £450,000 provided by the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership and the University of Derby.
