The nature reserve is "monitoring conditions" with water levels expected to peak over the next 24 hours.

A statement said: "We are strongly advising visitors to exercise caution if planning to visit the reserve as most paths are not accessible and flooding is likely to worsen throughout the day. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused."

    Jo Bostock

Barrow-upon-Soar resident Alison Johnston was brought up in the village - she remembers flooding being bad as a child, but after a lot of work was done, Barrow hadn't been as bad as Quorn and Cossington recently.

She worries that the water is just being passed around and villages still get cut off.

She got the alert last night on her phone and said it was quite loud and scary, and it took them by surprise.

    Jo Bostock
    Journalist, BBC Radio Leicester

People who had to abandon their homes were accommodated by Barrow Methodist Church at short notice - and groups meeting there last night stayed behind to help set up for evacuees.

Peter Yates, church treasurer, said: "We had guides and a Bible study group in at the time. The guides all helped to put out tables and chairs.

"We made sure the heating was on, the urns on and plenty of biscuits but we didn't have any bedding - people came and donated some, people just offered to help.

"The council said it could be a hundred, it could be none, there were four or five in the end. People didn't want to leave their homes."

Congregation member Peter Grant said: "I was really impressed. We were prepared for a lot more."

Cars are turning around and trying to find another route.

I'm on Granite Way in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire, where you can see emergency services at either end of the road because the centre of it is completely flooded.

A car is stuck in the flood - it had a person inside it, the person has been rescued but 4x4 responders need to recover the car.

Until that happens they're not allowing lorries to go through, and they are stacking up.
