    Staff at Derby's Museum of Making say they are "keeping a watch" on the River Derwent's rising water levels and are ready to initiate their flood plan "if needed".

    The museum was deluged when the River Derwent's water level rose to a record 3.58m (11.8ft) during Storm Babet in October 2023.

    Staff member Alex Rock said: "The river is high but it is below the point where we get concerned.

    "We know our flood plan inside out and our goal is to minimise any damage that we may face as a result of a flood."

    In Derby, Haslams Lane in Darley Abbey has been cut off due to rising water on the River Derwent, while the pitch and car park at Derby Rugby Club is currently submerged.

    One car has been left stranded and other drivers have been turning round, leaving residents on Folly Road cut off from reaching Alfreton Road.

    One resident there said: "This is the only way which we have in and out, because the bridge is closed as well to cars. It's pedestrians only."

    The city council has said Haslams Lane, Markeaton Lane and Locko Road are now closed as a result of flooding.

    It added the Cathedral Green Footbridge was now closed to pedestrians.

    Dramatic footage showing the moment a man rescued a woman from a car stranded in flood water has been shared online.

    The video shows Cimi Kazazi wade through waist-high water in the village of Great Glen, Leicestershire, before carrying the woman to safety.

    Mr Kazazi, owner of The Italian Greyhound restaurant, said he "didn't think twice" about going to the aid of the driver, who had become stranded outside his venue at about 07:00.

    He said he took the woman inside his restaurant so she could dry off and recover.

    The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "The people here have been so supportive. Without them I would have been in hospital."

    Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident earlier due to flooding in the county, and issued advice, external to residents and motorists.

    Residents in Gleneagles Avenue in Rushey Mead, Leicester, were hit just over a year ago by Storm Henk, and today have again seen water entering their homes.

    The water has completely submerged the road including covering over a mini-roundabout, and drivers are sending bow waves over into homes and gardens, locals said.

    Simel Kara said his mother Shobhna Kara, 74, had only moved back home just in time for Christmas - only for her home to flood once more.

    He said: "Her home had been completely stripped back and rebuilt. Then we woke up today and saw the water is back.

    "It's been very upsetting."

    Crews are "actively responding" to calls, the fire service added.

    Judi Beresford, assistant chief fire and rescue officer, said: "Flooding poses a serious risk to lives and property, and we urge everyone to take these warnings seriously. Our control room and crews are working tirelessly to assist those in need and to keep people safe.

    "We are working with our partners to reduce the impact of this major incident and ask the public to avoid flooded routes when travelling and never to enter flood water."

    Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has just confirmed it declared a major incident this morning in response to widespread flooding across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

    The fire service said it had received more than 200 calls, with crews attending incidents involving cars stuck in flood water, evacuating residents from flooded homes and rising water.

    So far, 17 members of the public have been rescued by fire crews.

    Leicestershire County Council says it has "flood gangs" attending more than 80 sites across the county today to assess and put up road closures.

    The authority urged people not to drive or wade through flood water.

    Leicestershire Police has said the most severely affected areas include Melton, Rutland and south Leicestershire - with flood warnings in place in Charnwood.

    Fire and rescue crews in Leicestershire are busy dealing with the fallout from "intense heavy rain" that's left high numbers of roads flooded.

    Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has issued advice to anyone out and about this morning.

    It asks:

    • Plan your journey and avoid slow traffic, as this may be due to flood water
    • Do not drive into flood water
    • Do not ignore road closures

    A spokesperson added: "If you get stuck and it's an emergency, call 999 and contact your car insurance provider and recovery service if required.

    "Be prepared and have a plan in place to stay safe."

    The flood action group in Woodborough, Nottinghamshire, said some roads in the village were submerged on Sunday night.

    Volunteers asked people not to drive through flood water on their way to work or school on Monday morning to try to prevent bow waves flooding properties.

    BBC reporter Sally Bowman has been in the village this morning and said the water levels had largely retreated, though Main Street remained shut.

    She said Environment Agency staff were on site and council road sweepers were expected to clear up later.

    I've passed through a number of villages in Derbyshire where roads have flooded.

    The driver of a blue Seat found themselves stranded after driving into flood water in Etwall Road in Egginton.

    In Repton, the junction of Pinfold Lane and High Street is also under water.

    Police have warned drivers not to enter flood water.
