The red weather warning has now expired

All morning we've been closely following disruption across the West Country.

Although the Met Office red weather warning is now over, things are still problematic, with an amber warning in place until 21:00 GMT. A yellow warning is in place on Sunday.

To recap, this is what has happened so far:

    • Road closures are in place in Bristol, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire, due to fallen trees. Unless there is a risk to life, these should be reported to local authorities
    • The M48 Severn Bridge and the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge remain closed in both directions due to strong winds
    • Public transport - particularly trains and buses - are facing delays and cancellations. There are no trains running between Bristol Parkway and South Wales. The line from Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington is open, but many trains are cancelled or severely delayed
    • Many flights in and out of Bristol Airport are either delayed or cancelled - although the first flight of the day - a RyanAir plane from Dublin - landed at 12:30
    • A lot of events, attractions and sports games are cancelled or closed
    • There are more than 14,000 properties without power across the region. Engineers from the National Grid and SSEN are working to restore the supply
    • The Met Office has issued a new yellow warning for Sunday, covering the whole of England and Wales

The Met Office has placed England and Wales under a yellow weather warning for wind on Sunday.

It said winds will gust to 35-45mph, and coastal areas could see gusts of up to 60mph.

Difficult driving conditions are likely, the Met Office said, and the wind may cause further travel disruption.

The rare red weather warning in the region was lifted at 11:00 GMT but amber and yellow warnings are still in place.

A row of closed Christmas market stalls in Gloucester.

It's a time where streams of shoppers would normally be lining the stalls in a dash to fetch Christmas presents, but today there is no-one in sight at Gloucester Quays Christmas Market.

The stalls are closed and the hatches are padlocked as Storm Darragh causes chaos in parts of Wales and the south-west of England.

  15. What problems will Bristol Airport be having this morning?published at 11:37 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December

The departures board for Bristol Airport this morning (here via Flight Radar 24) tells its own story of Storm Darragh's impact on civil aviation today.

Winds there have gusted to 62mph, with take-offs and landings outside safe operational limits so far. Once we see winds broadly fall to 40 knot (46mph) gusts and below, hopefully some operators can get going.

However, it'll stay windy all day, with crosswind at Bristol Airport becoming more of a feature.

Very strong winds also thwart safe ground operations at airports.

This includes limits on open aircraft doors - especially cargo doors - being exposed to strong gusts; to certain sensitivities of starting and running jet engines, including in crosswind; to risks of emergency slides blowing over a fuselage if deployed in emergency; and more generally to the use of airport vehicles used to support arrivals and departures.

So despite inevitable frustration for passengers, the current delays and disruption are absolutely all about safety.
