    An animal rights activists has just unfurled a banner on the red carpet. "Feathers are worn by beautiful birds and ugly people," the banner reads.

    The activist was quickly escorted off the red carpet by security guards.

    Makeup legend Charlotte Tilbury has been spotted on the red carpet. “Hello Darlings,” she says to the crowd before making her way towards the venue.

    Tilbury tells BBC News she's wearing vintage Galliano tonight, adding that she loves "fashion upcycling".

    "Fashion and makeup are soul mates - if you're designing a look, a face is a key part of the look," she says.

    Pop star Rita Ora is donning a mullet and a grey suit this evening. Her jewellery is from Primark - who she has a collection with.

    She says her outfit is inspired by punk music, and the late David Bowie. She's brought her mum along as her date tonight.

    Alexa Chung is no stranger to the Fashion Awards, and she's just told BBC News that tonight is "an amazing moment to show gratitude and to support the fashion industry".

    Sensibly covered in a large fake fur coat, the model admits that she's used to this night being one of the coldest of the year.

    Chung will be presenting a Special Recognition award to Margaret Barbour, describing the Dame as "an amazing woman".

    Asked what trend she would like to bring back, the TV host smiles and says she's been thinking a lot about "leg warmers" - the 80s trend of long, and often brightly coloured, sock cut-offs.

    It's not just celebrities from the fashion world making their way up the red carpet tonight - tennis superstar Venus Williams has also just arrived.

    The seven-time singles Grand Slam winner once had her own clothing line, EleVen, and she looks sleek in a stylish black blazer and cut-off trousers, while she poses for pictures.

    I’m right on the red carpet entrance - so far I’ve spotted Dr Who legend Billie Piper, as well as model and activist Munroe Bergdorf, who is wearing Irish designer Simone Rocha.

    Irish-born fashion designer Jonathan Anderson took home the top award last year.

    The category was stacked with big names, with tough competition from nominees Daniel Lee for Burberry, Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons for Prada and Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

    Known for his avant-garde and gender-fluid collections, Anderson is the founder of eponymous label JW Anderson, which he launched in 2008.

    Anderson is also the creative director of Spanish Luxury house Loewe, which specialises in leather goods, clothes and perfume.

    Anderson is also up for British Menswear Designer of the Year and British Womenswear Designer of the Year.

    As the award ceremony nears, fashion royalty are beginning to make their way up the Royal Albert Hall's red carpet.

    The first big names of the night have arrived; and it's the chief executive of the British Fashion Council Caroline Rush and its chairperson David Pemsel.

    It’s only eight degrees here in South Kensington, and more celebrities and fashionistas are expected shortly.

    Six models have been nominated for the accolade, which recognises models whose influence has “transcended the catwalk” over the past 12 months.

    Past winners include supermodels Bella Hadid, Naomi Campbell and Adut Akech.

    Here’s a rundown of the nominees this year:

    • Alex Consani - The 21-year-old has amassed a huge following on social media and walked for brands like Versace and Alexander McQueen
    • Amelia Gray - The daughter of TV personality Lisa Rinna, Gray has appeared in campaigns for Vivienne Westwood, Givenchy and Versace, to name a few
    • Alva Claire - The British model has walked for Rihanna's Savage x Fenty show and graced the cover of Vogue NL and Vogue Thailand
    • Anok Yai - She's the second black supermodel after Naomi Campbell to open a Prada show and has appeared on numerous Vogue covers
    • Liu Wen - Dubbed "China's first supermodel", Liu has walked for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and appeared on the cover of American Vogue
    • Mona Tougaard - The Danish model has opened for Loewe and Fendi and walked for a number of luxury brands

    Here’s a glance at five facts about the ceremony which is organised by the British Fashion Council and celebrates individuals and businesses who’ve made outstanding contributions to the fashion industry.

    • The Fashion Awards were known as the British Fashion Awards until 2016
    • They first took place in 1989
    • It’s a fundraiser event. Monies raised are meant to support students who have the potential to make an exceptional contribution to fashion
    • In 2007, the Fashion Creator Award was renamed the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator in honour of Isabella Blow, who died in May that year, in recognition of her support of British designers and her contribution to the fashion industry
    • Alexander McQueen won the British Designer of the Year award four times. He is the only designer to win the award four times

    Fashion is constantly evolving - and so are its materials. Last week, the British Fashion Council - which runs London Fashion Week - announced they are banning exotic animal skins on the catwalk.

    It means there will no longer be exotic skins - such as crocodile or snake - in show collections. London is the first of the major fashion capitals (Milan, Paris and New York) to do this. Copenhagen Fashion Week banned exotic skins back in March.

    Among the winners last time around were designers Sarah Burton and Jonathan Anderson, and model Paloma Elsesser - the first ever plus size woman to do so.

    Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani, known as Valentino, was honoured with the outstanding achievement award, while Edward Enninful - at the time the outgoing editor-in-chief of British Vogue - received the Trailblazer Award.

    Meanwhile Charlotte Tilbury - known for her eponymous cosmetics brand - won the Special Recognition Award.

    Tom Ford is one of the most famous fashion designers in the world and has dressed some of the biggest stars.

    This year, he’s being awarded the coveted Outstanding Achievement Award, which recognises designers who’ve had an overwhelming influence on the fashion industry throughout their career.

    The American designer held leading positions at luxury brands Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent before launching his eponymous label in 2005.

    During his 10-year tenure at Gucci, Ford made the luxury fashion house one of the most profitable brands in the world.

    Ford has designed menswear, womenswear, eyewear and accessories, and has launched cosmetics and fragrance lines.
