    I’m currently standing at the police cordon just on the edge of Middleton Road, where the incident has taken place.

    Helicopters are flying overhead, we’ve got sirens going every two minutes, police have cordoned off the site. I’ve seen paramedics and the fire service all on site.

    A major incident - and Operation Plato - has been declared.

    Lots of members of the public, including members of the Jewish community, are gathering round now to see what has happened.

    Understandably, a huge shock to the people of Greater Manchester this morning.

  2. Badenoch condemns 'vile and disgusting' attackpublished at 11:25 BST

    Asked about the synagogue attack in Manchester, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch tells the BBC it looks like "an outrageous attack on the Jewish community on their holiest day" - calling it "vile and disgusting".

    Police tell the BBC one of those injured is a security guard.

    To recap, police say four people were hurt in the attack, and the suspect was shot. The Manchester mayor says the suspect is believed to be dead, but their condition hasn't yet been confirmed.

    The prime minister is to fly back from the European Political Community gathering in Copenhagen early, after the attack at a synagogue in Manchester.

    Keir Starmer has been briefed in the last few minutes in the Danish capital, and will return home shortly.

    BBC Verify has been looking at footage linked to the attack at a synagogue in Manchester.

    The video shows armed police officers outside a synagogue on Middleton Road standing in front of a person lying on the ground.

    Another person outside the synagogue is also lying on the ground surrounded by blood.

    We matched images from the footage with what we could see on Google Maps to verify the location.

    We've just had this statement from Prime Minister Keir Starmer:

    "I’m appalled by the attack at a synagogue in Crumpsall.

    "The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific.

    "My thoughts are with the loved ones of all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services and all the first responders."

    Police said they declared "Plato" moments after first hearing about the incident.

    Operation Plato is a set of responses by the emergency services to large-scale incidents including "marauding terrorist attacks".

    When police declare Operation Plato, the other emergency services such as the ambulance service then have protocols that they follow.

    For example NHS trusts will activate their major incident plans.

    Details are continuing to emerge of a major incident at a synagogue in Manchester - here's what we know so far:

    • Police responded at 09:31 to reports of a car driving towards members of the public, and a man being stabbed, at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue
    • A major incident was declared by Greater Manchester Police, with firearms officers being deployed to the area
    • When paramedics arrived to the scene, they found four people injured - police say the injuries were a result of the both the vehicle and stab wounds
    • One man has been shot - police say he's believed to be the offender
    • Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham says "it is believed" the offender's dead, but tells BBC Radio Manchester this information hasn't yet been confirmed
    • He also says he's been told that "the immediate danger appears to be over"
    • Despite this, members of the public are being warned to avoid the area while police deal with the incident

    We're hearing more detail now from Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who's been speaking to BBC Radio Manchester.

    Burnham says "it is believed" that the offender is deceased, but says this "is not confirmed".

    We've just had the following statement from Greater Manchester Police, giving more details on the incident:

    "Police were called to the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, on Middleton Road, Crumpsall, at 9:31am by a member of the public, stating he had witnessed a car being driven towards members of the public, and one man had been stabbed.

    "GMP declared PLATO and a major incident at 9:37am. Shots were fired by Greater Manchester Police firearms officers at 9:38am. One man has been shot, believed to be the offender.

    "Paramedics arrived at the scene at 9:41 and are tending to members of the public, currently four members of the public with injuries caused by both the vehicle and stab wounds.

    "Members of the public are asked to avoid the area while the police continue to deal with the incident."

    They were not able to say what their condition is.

    The North West Ambulance Service has just put out a statement, confirming a major incident has been declared in Crumpsall, Manchester.

    They say:

    "Following reports of an incident on Middleton Road in Crumpsall, the trust has dispatched resources to the scene.

    "We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services.

    "Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible."

    "At the same time, I can give some assurance that the immediate danger appears to be over," he adds.
