  2. Labour MP who unseated Truss 'absolutely thrilled'published at 07:42 5 July

One of Norfolk's new Labour MP's, Terry Jermy, said the night was nerve-shredding but he was thrilled he would now represent South West Norfolk, after unseating former prime minister Liz Truss.

The result seemed to switch a few times, he said, as he was "ahead" at one table while ballot papers were counted, with Ms Truss and Reform UK candidate Toby MacKenzie were ahead on others.

"I've put my all into the campaign," he said.

"I probably didn't think it was likely [I would win]. It was certainly a possibility, and as the campaign has gone on it has felt more likely as time has progressed."

He was asked if the independent candidate James Bagge and Mr MacKenzie had done him a favour by splitting the Tory vote. Ms Truss had had a 26,195 majority at the last election, with Mr Jermy beating her by just 630 votes.

"There was a lot of choice with nine candidates in total, and clearly the Conservative vote disappeared in all directions," he said.

"A lot of people have put their faith in Labour for the first time, I hope I can repay that as their MP."

  3. Norfolk's political map turns multi-colouredpublished at 07:40 5 July

Norfolk is waking up to a very different political landscape this morning.

Overnight, the county has gone from having just a single Labour MP in a sea of blue, to having five parties represented in Westminster.

There was shock as Reform UK took Great Yarmouth from the Conservatives with a majority of 1,426.

But there was more trouble in store for the Tories as the Liberal Democrats won North Norfolk

In South Norfolk, Labour’s Ben Goldsborough won the former Conservative stronghold for the first time since the end of World War Two.

The Greens won their first seat in the East, taking the newly-created Waveney Valley with a majority of 5,594.

But it was the battle for South West Norfolk that provided the final and greatest drama of the night.

Former Prime Minister Liz Truss lost her seat to Labour’s Terry Jermy by the slimmest of margins, the result coming down to just 630 votes.

Previously she had a majority of 26,195.

So although the headline of the night may be a Labour victory, both they and the Conservatives will be fully aware of the surge of support for Reform here in Norfolk.

When the counting tables have been cleared away and the dust has settled, the patchwork of political parties will have to work out why this change happened, and what voters are expecting from them now.

You'd have thought he'd had enough of anything Green, but Tory candidate Richard Rout has a spot of gardening on his mind after losing out to Adrian Ramsay in Waveney Valley.

“We knew we were up against it and the national tide was against us," he conceded.

"Of course, it is a disappointing result but the party needs to pause, reflect, and rebuild from here.

“I think there are many seats we were contesting and the Greens just four, so they were able to put all of their resources into those four.

“We were focusing more broadly and, of course, could not do that – so it’s not a case of feeling let down and now is not the time for me to cast the finger of blame.”

So what’s next for Mr Rout?

“I need to mow my lawn,” he said.

"Tonight's result proves voters should never be taken for granted," said Mr Jermy.

"It is the honour of my life to be elected and I promise to do everything I can to serve and deliver for the residents of this constituency."

  9. Ramsay 'honoured' to win Waveney Valley seatpublished at 06:26 5 July

Adrian Ramsay, the Green Party co-leader who has just won the new constituency of Waveney Valley with 20,467 votes, says he feels “honoured”.

He said: “I have been doing it a long time and I never take any election for granted but it has felt incredibly positive right through this campaign.

“People were ready for change and they have seen the Green Party rising and rising in this region and now they have a Green representative in Westminster.

“I feel overwhelmed by the support and the enthusiasm with which people were voting Green right throughout Waveney Valley and East Anglia was humbling.

“It has been a long journey but I just feel honoured by the support and I will do my best to represent people right across the constituency."

  10. Tension at count for Liz Truss seatpublished at 06:19 5 July

It's been a night of big changes across Norfolk.

The only seat yet to declare is South West Norfolk, the constituency of former prime minister Liz Truss.

There is tension in the air. It is not yet known whether Ms Truss has held her seat.

  14. Labour MP to prioritise SEND childrenpublished at 05:29 5 July

Ben Goldsborough, who has claimed the first Labour victory in South Norfolk in 74 years, has been speaking to BBC Radio Norfolk's Chris Goreham.

He said his key aims were improving housing prospects in the constituency - both with new homes and the rental system - and speeding up assessments for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

"I heard some heartbreaking stories with families who have fallen through the chasm of Norfolk education and health system; mothers and father in tears, having waited 10 years for an assessment for their child," he said.

"If that doesn't make you want to change something locally, nothing will."

  15. Task to beat Tories was 'pretty steep'published at 05:19 5 July

With two seats left to declare, North Norfolk MP Steffan Aquarone is the county's only Liberal Democrat representative.

He told BBC Norfolk political reporter Paul Moseley he knew he had a fight on his hands to unseat Conservative Duncan Baker, who took the seat from the Lib Dems in 2019.

“Duncan Baker had built up a personal vote with his casework and commitment to the local area," he said.

"The task was pretty steep, [but] a year ago, the writing was perhaps on the wall for the Conservatives nationally and that gave us the confidence to believe that we were going to do it.”

He said Lib Dems had an important role to play as a “progressive, centrist, internationalist party”

Richard Rout, who is standing in Waveney Valley for the Conservatives, appears to be conceding defeat, despite the new seat straddling the Tory heartlands of rural Norfolk and Suffolk.

When asked if he expected to win, Mr Rout said: “Absolutely not.

“For those of us on the ground, looking at the effort the Green Party have been putting in, they fought it like a by-election.

“I’ve never seen so much money thrown at a campaign. It was quite staggering, so I’m expecting a difficult night.”
