Tony Blair, pressed again over whether he’ll be sharing a platform with Ed Miliband in this campaign, is rather blunter in his next answer: “Just so that you understand this and get this fully, I support him 100% to lead our party to victory at the next election.” But then he perhaps acknowledges some differences between them.

There’s always been disagreement within the Labour Party. Different people with different views about how we should approach things. But the important thing is what we share in common: a deep and profound belief in social justice, and a belief also that it is right our society and country and economy are run in the interests of the many and not the few.”

  9. Blair on Scotlandpublished at 11:15

On Scotland, where Labour faces an uphill struggle against the SNP in the wake of last year’s independence referendum, Mr Blair says he supports devolution. He adds: “We do face a tough challenge in Scotland but we’ve got a great leader of the Scottish Labour Party and we’ve got a great case to make.” He says he hopes that “reason breaks through”.

  11. Standing ovationpublished at 11:11

    Tony Blair

After a standing ovation, the BBC’s James Landale invites Tony Blair to say exactly what he disagrees with Ed Miliband on - and why Mr Miliband isn't sharing a platform with him. Mr Miliband has campaigning to do elsewhere, Mr Blair replies. “We’re a party that can do more than one thing at once, which is why we’d make a very good government.” That gets laughter and applause from the Labour audience. We think that might also be a dig at David Cameron, who told a Heat magazine interviewer he couldn't multi-task. Mr Blair then adds: “I agree completely with what he’s saying about the central challenge of inequality today… I think he’s got an excellent set of policies to deal with it.”

Back in Sedgefield, Tony Blair has moved on to address nationalism and, in the British context, UKIP. This kind of politics is always "ugly", he says. "It can never disguise its essentially mean spirit." That triggers another round of applause.

  14. Osborne on Blairpublished at 11:02

    George OsborneImage source, Reuters

Earlier this morning George Osborne offered his own take on Tony Blair’s intervention. He doesn’t think we’ll be seeing much of the man who kept the Conservatives out of government for 13 years. “I suspect he's going to do the absolute minimum required not to be blamed for Labour's defeat when it comes,” he said at this morning’s Sunday Times event. “He's doing a very good service for us all today by first of all advertising the fact that if you vote Conservative you get a referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union… by refusing to appear alongside the Labour leader and indeed putting himself on the other end of the country, advertising the fact that he thinks the Labour leader is weak."

  15. 'Juddering impact'published at 10:58

Tony Blair says the biggest shift of his “children’s lifetime” is the rise of China. Whether it's the ASEAN trading bloc in Asia, or the South American Mercosur, continental trading is vitally important - and makes the European project even more important than ever before, he argues. Then there’s the Russian threat to eastern European states. “Without the shelter not just of Nato but of the EU, their vulnerability with consequences for our own security would be chronic,” he says. “With all of this happening, do we really think this is the time in which to put into play our very membership of the European Union, the largest commercial market and most developed political union in the world, and the one on our doorstep?” He suggests the resulting talks would have a “juddering impact” across the continent.

    Tony Blair

Next, Tony Blair turns to the arguments for having an EU referendum in the first place. He mocks the idea of “periodic referendums”, wondering whether we should have them for Scotland or Nato or the rest of the UK. Doing so for Europe, he insists, is “a completely unacceptable gamble with our nation’s future”. That gets a round of applause which Mr Blair - for some reason - seems surprised by. “Thank you,” he tells the audience.
