Reports from the St Austell and Newquay count that Stephen Gilbert is already conceding defeat. Official result not in yet.

Before 2010, most of the St Austell and Newquay constituency area was part of the Truro & St Austell seat. That was a Tory stronghold until 1974, when it fell to the Liberals, who held onto it for many years.

In 2010 - after the boundary changes - Stephen Gilbert narrowly won the new seat of St Austell & Newquay for the Liberal Democrats with a majority of 1,300 and a 43% share of the vote. The Conservatives took 40% of the vote and Labour 7%.

  6. Torbay loss 'very disappointing' for Sanderspublished at 04:51 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

    Andrew Segal
    Local Live

Torbay's new MP, Conservative Kevin Foster, has remarked that Adrian Sanders losing his Parliamentary seat must be "very disappointing" for his fellow candidate.

Speaking about Mr Sanders' personal support in the community, the new MP said: "It's more to do with the rosette he wore on his lapel than the heart he wore on his sleeve."

Mr Foster won the seat with 19,551 votes (41%) to Mr Sanders' 16,265 (34%). Mr Sanders had taken the seat from the Tories in 1997.

  7. 'Pivotal' Cornwallpublished at 04:49 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

    Tamsin Melville
    Political Reporter

Cornwall was identified early on by David Cameron as having a "pivotal" role in this General Election. So what makes the results here so crucial?

Between 2005 and 2010 the county was entirely Lib Dem, but the Tories then took half the six constituencies in close fights.

    David Cameron

Cornwall in fact plays host to one of the most marginal seats in the country in the shape of Camborne, Redruth and Hayle after the Conservatives beat the Lib Dems by just 66 votes.

Now after 5 years of coalition, and the polls neck and neck, the Tories are as keen to grab the three other seats as the Lib Dems are to keep them.

    Election 2015

How many MPs do you need to form a majority?

The finishing line is 326. That would be enough for a government to vote through new laws without being defeated by their opponents. If they don't reach that number we have got what is called a hung Parliament.

  10. Torbaypublished at 04:42 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

In the lead up to the election Torbay Conservative candidate Kevin Foster told the BBC: "They have a choice between myself, with a plan for the Bay, the region and the nation or the other candidates with no real plan for the Bay and the possibility of Ed Miliband as PM."

  12. Devon, the Conservative strongholdpublished at 04:41 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

    Jenny Kumah
    Political Reporter

Devon has traditionally been a conservative stronghold. Most of the Tories in Devon were voted in with large majorities in 2010. So after five years of coalition government, will their popularity be dented?

The most marginal seats in Devon were won by a whisker by Conservatives in 2010 - Anne Marie Morris (majority of 523) in Newton Abbott and Oliver Colvile who took Plymouth Sutton and Devonport (majority of 1149).

    Oliver Colvile

So will being part of the Conservative-led coalition help or hinder them in their quest to be re-elected?

The seat of Newton Abbot in Devon consists of rolling countryside, stretching from the granite tors on Dartmoor, to the long sandy beaches at Teignmouth and Dawlish. At its centre is the small market town of Newton Abbot, with its proud history in engineering.

Richard Younger-Ross won the seat for the Liberal Democrats in 2001. In 2010, Conservative Anne-Marie Morris took it back with 43% of the votes; Liberal Democrats got 41.9%, Labour 7% and UKIP 6.4%.

At the centre of this election campaign will be the future of the railway line at Dawlish - severed by storms in Feb 2014 and repaired at vast expense.
