    The new MP for St Ives, Derek Thomas, completed the clean sweep of Tory constituencies in Cornwall when he ended Andrew George's 18 year grip on the seat.

    He told BBC Radio Cornwall, "Thank you for putting your trust in me, I will not take that for granted. I am ready for the task ahead and looking forward to taking up the role and the great privilege of serving you."

    Veteran Fred Colton, 92, is enjoying VE Day celebrations at a pop-in event organised by the Royal British Legion in Plymouth.

    It is one of a number of events being held across the South West to mark 70 years since Victory in Europe was declared, marking the formal conclusion of Hitler's war. With it came the end of six years of misery, suffering, courage and endurance across the world.

    UKIP candidates in Devon & Cornwall are reflecting on a campaign that saw many increase their votes, some even achieving second place, but overall the party failed to win a single south west seat.

    Robert Smith stood for UKIP in the Camborne, Redruth & Hayle seat, where he was third. He said: "I wish we'd done better across the country but I think there was a Conservative rip tide from the borders down and nobody seemed to be able to do anything about it."

    Former Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George, who has become the last Liberal Democrat to lose his St Ives seat to the Conservatives, told us he is "devastated", adding: "I'm not walking away from this constituency, I was born and brought up in it."

    "Clearly there was nothing which we could do to counteract the tsunami which was taking place against us, this was a national movement, there were forces beyond our control", the clearly emotional politician said.

    Plymouth City Council leader Tudor Evans has kept his Ham ward seat.

    His Labour party hold a one seat majority and there are 19 seats available in this election. The first few results are now in with Labour retaining Honicknowle and Drake and the Conservatives retaining the Plymstock Radford and Plympton Erle seats.

    The scene is set for the count in the Plymouth City Council election.

    The City Council holds elections by thirds, which means a third of seats are contested each year for three years, followed by a 'fallow' year, when no elections are held.

    There are nineteen seats up for grabs this time around. As it stands, Labour have 29 seats on the council and the Conservatives have 24.

    If you look at the collapse of the Lib Dem vote, it's been quite spectacular in some local seats dropping by almost 30%, but you should also bear in mind the Conservatives haven't only made gains at the expense of the Lib Dems.

    In Plymouth, which is traditionally a Conservative/Labour contest, Labour has lost a seat to the Conservatives and the Tories have also held on to a seat Labour thought they were very well placed to gain - that could have something to do with the rise in the UKIP vote in Plymouth.

    For Andrew George in St Ives, the answer was simple - dress up as the patron saint of tinners, St Piran - and dance through the streets of Helston as part of Flora Day.

    The Lib Dem veteran said: "What's more important - the general election or Flora Day in Helston? It's Flora Day isn't it! I've always taken part, as soon as I realised the count wasn't going to be until much later I promised I would be here."

    The Mayoral election is taking place in Torbay with Gordon Oliver, who was sacked as the leader of the council last year after a vote of no confidence, looking to be re-elected.
