Political pundits across the world could be waiting for the results from west Cornwall the day after the general election 2015.

It's expected most constituencies in Devon & Cornwall will have declared a result by 07:00 on Friday (recounts notwithstanding) but due to the logistical challenge of flying ballot boxes from the Isles of Scilly, counting the votes in the St Ives constituency will not start until 10:00 and might not be declared until 16:00.

    Isles of Scilly

The news on who has won in St Ives - where Lib Dem Andrew George held a majority of 1,719 - could therefore have a significant impact nationally.

  9. Liberal Democrats a 'spent force'published at 04:02 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Labour's Truro and Falmouth candidate Stuart Roden has told BBC Radio Cornwall's Tamsin Melville that he believes the Liberal Democrats' vote in Cornwall has "completely collapsed", the Lib Dems are a "spent force" and it was likely the Conservatives would take all six seats.

He also acknowledged the lack of his party's popularity locally (it won no seats in 2010), but added that Labour would begin trying to build up grass roots support again in time for the next election.

  10. Lib Dems 'mildly tempered Tories'published at 04:01 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

"Their wilful disregard for the vulnerable and disadvantaged has only been mildly tempered by Lib Dems in coalition and I have no desire to see a repeat."

Will the party with the most MPs form the next government?

Not necessarily. The party with the most MPs, when the votes have been counted in all 650 constituencies, is normally described as the winner and its leader nearly always goes on to become the next prime minister.

But that might not happen this time if there is an inconclusive result. It is possible for the party that came second to form a government with the help of other parties.
