Despite gaining five seats from the Lib Dems, the Conservatives are still five seats short of a majority.

The Conservatives have taken Winchester City Council, external, which had previously been under no overall control, to achieve a five-seat majority.

Former Labour MP John Denham has spoken about the defeat of his party's candidate Rowenna Davis in his former Southampton Itchen seat.
"The truth is that we were defeated not so much by a surge in new votes for the Conservatives but our failure to win back some of the people who have been Labour voters that didn't vote for us in 2010 and clearly, from the figures last night, a significant number of them went with UKIP."

The mayor of Witney, and Conservative councillor for Witney East Jeanette Baker, external has described the local authority result as "amazing".
She said: "I can't say that I'm not happy about being elected a district councillor. The turnout was amazing, no matter what party, the interest in what was happening in their country was evident."
Mrs Baker said that she would work to ensure Witney's infrastructure to support new housing in the area.

The Beer, Baccy and Scratchings Party, who were forced to change their name from the Beer, Baccy and Crumpets Party shortly before the Electoral Commission deadline, won 136 votes in Eastleigh.

Ranil Jayawardena has refused to shake hands with UKIP's Robert Blay during their post-results speeches following an alleged shooting threat.
Mr Blay offered his hand to his Conservative opponent, who held on to the seat at Hampshire North East, following the count at Hart Leisure Centre, Fleet.
Police have started an investigation into alleged comments made by Mr Blay, who was filmed apparently threatening to shoot his rival.
Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire after retaining her seat as MP for Maidenhead, Theresa May avoided the question of whether she wanted to remain Home Secretary.
She said: "I'm very pleased with the progress that we've made at the Home Office.
"But I've always taken a very simple view in politics that you wait to be asked and whatever job you're asked to do, you get on and do it to the best of your ability."

The Conservatives have taken 16 of the 17 available seats on West Oxfordshire District Council, external, increasing their majority from 40 to 49 seats.
Tory Guy Wall won the only previous Labour seat on the council in Chipping Norton and Andy Graham won for the Lib Dems at Charlbury and Finstock.
